Solo Exhibition

Willow and Ghost

January 25 - February 25, 2023

Heussenstamm. Raum für Kunst und Stadt, Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Painting, Video Installation, and Drawing

Celestial bodies, the night sky, and above all, the moon are central themes in Miran Yang's artistic exploration. In her paintings and video works, the Korean-born artist examines the relationship between humans and natural phenomena. Through the animistic belief that the elements of nature are imbued with a soul, Yang discovers surprising parallels between Korean and Western cultures. The exhibition title, "Willow and Ghost," points in this direction, as the willow tree is symbolically significant in both Europe and Asia, albeit with different meanings.

Miran Yang's paintings are characterized by delicate yet profound color spaces. Various shades of gray often dominate her works, into which she integrates vibrant, colorful areas and linear elements. Comic- or manga-like figures appear, lending the images a surreal quality.

Miran Yang explains:

"The lifeless elements in the sky, which are part of nature, and natural phenomena such as the moon, clouds, rain, rainbows, and wind are anthropomorphized in my work through the lens of fairy-tale imagination. Anthropomorphism, often observed in fairy tales, projects human qualities onto abstract and non-human elements, allowing them to be perceived as living entities."

For the exhibition at Heussenstamm, the artist has created not only new and partially large-format paintings but also two site-specific video installations, which are being presented exclusively in this exhibition.
